Captain Jim Makin

Teaches ASA 101, 103, 104, 116, 118

Jim Makin is a seasoned sailing instructor with a wealth of experience in both the U.S. Navy and civilian sailing. With over 20 years of sailing expertise, Jim is dedicated to sharing his passion and knowledge with aspiring sailors at Norton Yachts.

Jim’s sailing journey began over two decades ago when he completed his first sailing class with the U.S. Navy. Since then, he has achieved the rank of Senior Skipper (Class D) in 2000 and became an instructor for the Navy in the same year. His extensive naval background has allowed him to instruct at all Navy levels, including numerous sorties on the picturesque Chesapeake Bay and offshore.

As a Certified Sailing Instructor with the American Sailing Association, Jim brings a professional and comprehensive approach to his teaching. Additionally, he is a Qualified Virginia Boating Safety Education Instructor, emphasizing the importance of safety and responsible boating practices. With a USCG Captain’s License, including an auxiliary sail endorsement, Jim’s expertise and skills on the water are unparalleled.

Jim’s passion for sailing has taken him to various destinations around the globe. He has chartered in breathtaking locations such as the British Virgin Islands, Pacific Northwest, Croatia, Greek Isles, and has even made several trips to the stunning Bermuda. His experience also extends to providing on-the-water instruction for crews sailing to New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Living on a creek of the Chesapeake Bay, Jim possesses a detailed knowledge of the bay’s intricate waters, stretching from the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal to Hampton Roads. This intimate understanding of the area ensures that students receive valuable insights into local conditions and hidden gems.

Jim’s personal sailing endeavors include owning a Beneteau 311 sloop, which serves as his platform for further exploration and enjoyment on the water.

Captain Scott Ziemer

Meet Scott Ziemer, a seasoned sailing instructor at Norton Yachts. With an impressive sailing background spanning 30 years, Scott brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his teaching role.

Having recently retired from his own construction company, Scott has dedicated his passion for sailing to sharing his knowledge and skills with others. Throughout his sailing journey, he has explored the stunning waters of the Chesapeake Bay and embarked on exciting onboard cruises between the Chesapeake Bay and the Bahamas. His thirst for adventure has taken him on voyages to New England, Nova Scotia, the Caribbean, and even the picturesque canals of France.

Scott’s dedication to safety and professionalism is evident in his qualifications. In 2012, he earned his Captains OUPV license, demonstrating his proficiency in navigating and commanding vessels. Furthermore, he is a certified Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Boating Safety Instructor, equipped to educate aspiring sailors on safe boating practices. Additionally, Scott holds certifications in First Aid/CPR, ensuring the well-being and security of his students while out on the water.

As a sailing instructor, Scott is committed to imparting his extensive knowledge and love for sailing to students of all levels. Introducing Steve Runals, a highly experienced sailing instructor and adventurer. With an impressive sailing background spanning over 40 years, Steve brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the world of sailing.

As a USCG Near Coastal Captain with extensive offshore experience, Steve has sailed in various bodies of water, including the Pacific Ocean, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. He has navigated boats of all sizes, from small vessels to impressive 51-foot yachts. His offshore voyages include remarkable deliveries, such as Panama to Texas, St. Vincent to Annapolis, Norfolk to the British Virgin Islands, Canary Islands to St. Lucia and Long Island to Portugal!

Currently, Steve is the proud owner of a Pacific Seacraft 34, a vessel that has accompanied him on unforgettable journeys. His sailing accomplishments include sailing to Bermuda and successfully completing a solo trip to Block Island, showcasing his exceptional skills and passion for the open seas.

After retiring from a distinguished 29-year career in the Army, Steve has found his true calling in sharing his love for sailing with others. As a certified ASA Sailing Instructor, specifically certified through ASA 106, he possesses the necessary expertise to teach aspiring sailors the art and intricacies of this versatile sport. Steve derives immense joy and satisfaction from helping individuals discover the joys and excitement that sailing has to offer.

Living and working in the Norfolk, VA area, Steve is deeply immersed in the local sailing community. His knowledge of the region’s waters, coupled with his extensive sailing background, allows him to provide invaluable insights and guidance to his students.

Steve holds qualifications to teach ASA 101, 103, and 104, ensuring that you receive top-notch instruction at every level. With 20 years of sailing the beautiful Chesapeake Bay under his belt, he possesses an intimate knowledge of the region’s waters, currents, and hidden gems.

Having owned and sailed five different sailboats throughout his career, Steve currently commands a Hunter 38, a vessel that perfectly embodies his passion for sailing. His expertise extends beyond the water, as he is also an OUPV Licensed Coast Guard Captain, guaranteeing your safety during your sailing adventures.

Steve’s teaching prowess extends beyond the nautical realm. With 10 years of experience as a flight and ground instructor for both private and airline pilots, he brings a unique blend of precision, attention to detail, and a calm demeanor to his sailing instruction.

In addition to his role as a sailing instructor, Steve has spent the last 30 years as an accomplished airline and private jet pilot. This vast aviation experience further enhances his understanding of weather patterns, navigation, and communication skills, ensuring a comprehensive and well-rounded learning experience.

Captain Jim Brewer

Jim Brewer, a seasoned sailing instructor, brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep love for the sea to his role at Norton Yachts, a cherished, family-oriented marina in Deltaville. With a lifelong passion for sailing and scuba diving, Jim has honed his skills and developed a profound understanding of the waters over the years.

After spending many enjoyable years in Virginia Beach, Jim made the exciting decision to relocate to Deltaville in 2022. His sailing journey began at a young age, when he embarked on unforgettable voyages with his father aboard the family sailboat, affectionately named “Falstaff,” at the tender age of 8. These early experiences fostered a lasting connection with sailing that continues to thrive within him.

Now the proud owner of his own sailboat, “Calypso,” Jim has expanded his horizons through extensive charters in the Caribbean. From idyllic island hopping to challenging ocean passages, he has embraced the thrill of sailing in diverse and captivating locations, even venturing as far as Antigua. These ventures have allowed him to witness the wonders of the sea firsthand and deepen his expertise as a sailor.

Jim’s commitment to excellence and safety is evident through his USCG Master’s license, which includes sailing and towing endorsements. Moreover, his dedication to sharing his knowledge led him to obtain certifications to teach the American Sailing Association (ASA) courses, specifically ASA 101, 103, 104, and 118. Equipped with this comprehensive skill set, Jim guides and inspires students of all levels, from beginners seeking their first taste of sailing to experienced sailors looking to refine their techniques.

In addition to his role as a sailing instructor, Jim is the proud owner of a safety training and consulting business. Leveraging his extensive experience, he imparts crucial safety skills and knowledge to others, ensuring they can navigate the waters with confidence and caution. Notably, his commitment to the well-being of others extends beyond sailing, as he also serves as a Paramedic with the Middlesex Rescue Squad in Deltaville.
